Clinical Solutions for Airway and Sleep Dysfunction

Why You're Tired, Tense, and Still Not Sleeping

Chronic fatigue, mouth breathing, poor sleep, clenching, and underdeveloped jaws are often connected to one overlooked issue: restricted or dysfunctional airway development. In our practice, airway health isn’t an afterthought—it’s central to everything we do.

When it comes to Airway and Sleep Disfunction,  Dr. Tovar often collaborates with sleep physicians, orthodontists, and therapeutic specialists, to ensure each patient receives comprehensive, coordinated support.

These treatments are designed to identify and address the structural and functional factors that influence breathing, muscle balance, and sleep at every age, with the right specialists involved at the right time.

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining the muscles of the face, tongue, and jaw to support proper breathing, swallowing, and oral posture. These muscles play a key role in airway function, and dysfunction can often go unnoticed, especially in children.
In our practice, myofunctional therapy is delivered through close collaboration with trusted myofunctional therapists and a broader care team that may include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, osteopaths, and craniosacral therapists. Together, this team helps identify and correct habits like mouth breathing, low tongue posture, and improper swallowing. Therapy is also essential before and after tongue- or lip-tie releases in children and adults (not infants), ensuring the muscles are strong, coordinated, and able to adapt to structural changes.

MyoMunchee

MyoMunchee is a small, chewable appliance used to activate and strengthen the muscles involved in breathing, swallowing, and jaw development. It’s most often prescribed for children with low oral tone or poor chewing patterns, but can also support adults in myofunctional therapy, post-release recovery, or TMJ care.

Tongue‑Tie & Lip‑Tie Releases

Tethered oral tissues can inhibit movement and cause issues ranging from breastfeeding challenges to airway compromise and speech limitations. Dr. Tovar evaluates both anatomy and function before recommending a CO₂ laser frenectomy / frenuloplasty.
This method allows precise release of restrictive tissues with minimal bleeding and rapid healing. For infants, we coordinate care with lactation consultants and bodyworkers. For older children and adults, releases are performed as part of a broader airway and functional treatment plan.

Oral Appliances for Sleep and Breathing

Growth & Development

Oral appliances can make a big difference in how you breathe, sleep, and feel. We use custom appliances to treat snoring, clenching, fatigue, and obstructive sleep apnea. For children, appliances help guide proper jaw development and create space for the tongue. For adults, they can reposition the lower jaw during sleep to improve airflow.

Biomimetic (Vivos)

Dr. Tovar is trained in the Vivos system, which uses removable appliances to stimulate natural jaw growth and expand the airway without surgery.
In children, Vivos Guides help widen the arches and support nasal breathing during key developmental windows. For adults, Vivos is used to treat mild to moderate sleep apnea by correcting underdevelopment and improving airway space. Therapy is customized, tracked with imaging, and often combined with muscle retraining for long-term results.

01

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment in our practice is about more than straight teeth. We use orthodontics as a tool to support healthy jaw development, create airway space, and stabilize muscle function. Treatment plans are designed to work in harmony with breathing, posture, and long-term structural balance. When a patient’s needs are best served with traditional bracket-and-wire orthodontics, Dr. Tovar collaborates closely with trusted orthodontic partners to ensure comprehensive, coordinated care.

02

Airway-Focused Clear Aligner Therapy (CandidPro)

CandidPro aligners offer a discreet, airway-conscious option for patients with mild to moderate crowding or spacing. Unlike aligners that focus solely on aesthetics, CandidPro—combined with Dr. Tovar’s advanced training—supports proper tongue space and jaw alignment as part of a broader functional approach. For cases that fall outside aligner therapy, we coordinate seamlessly with orthodontists who provide traditional braces so every patient receives the most appropriate treatment for their needs.

03

Home Sleep Testing

At-home sleep studies help screen for conditions such as upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and obstructive sleep apnea. While Dr. Tovar is not a sleep physician and does not diagnose sleep disorders, she reviews sleep study data in the context of CBCT imaging and functional records to assess airway and structural contributors. When findings suggest moderate to severe sleep-disordered breathing or require medical diagnosis and management, care is coordinated with a qualified sleep physician for formal diagnosis and treatment planning.

04

TMJ & Facial Pain Treatment

Temporomandibular joint disorders are managed through oral appliance therapy, targeted muscle retraining, and photobiomodulation (red light therapy). We also collaborate with specialists like craniosacral therapists for systemic support. The goal is to stop joint degeneration, resolve pain, and end nighttime muscle clenching.

05

Intraoral Imaging

We use high-resolution intraoral photos and scans as part of every diagnostic process. These images help us evaluate the airway, bite, and jaw development with clarity. Imaging is taken at key points throughout treatment so we can track changes, plan precisely, and make informed decisions as care progresses.
